The basics
What is Kinelight?
Kinelight is show control software for the Mac, built for dance and live shows. You patch your lights, build the stage, make looks and effects, busk live and run cues on the music — with pyro, haze, a video wall and an iPad or phone remote in the same show.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 12 Monterey or later, your lights, and an Art-Net or sACN node (or a DMX interface that speaks either). Kinelight is Mac only for now. With Kinelight Pro or Venue, an iPad or phone on the same network becomes a remote and any extra monitor or TV can be a second screen.
Which lights does it work with?
Any DMX fixture. The library has 670 profiles with exact channel orders; you can refresh it from the Open Fixture Library, import Avolites or JSON profiles, or build your own. Imported a patch with blank channels? Fix layouts swaps the right profile in.
Does it need the internet during a show?
No. Your licence is kept on your Mac. Your main and backup Macs only need to check in at least every 15 days, and Kinelight never stops the light output in the middle of a show.
What’s a main Mac and a backup Mac?
Your main Mac runs the show. Your backup Mac is ready to take over if the main one has a problem — it can run the show too — and it’s handy for editing shows away from the venue. Each subscription includes one of each. When Kinelight signs in, you choose which one it is, and you can swap them any time in the app or on your account page.
Lighting & networking
Art-Net or sACN?
Both. Kinelight sends one universe, Kinelight Pro four, and Kinelight Venue as many as you need. Add as many nodes as you need, each Art-Net or sACN, sent to one address or broadcast, and drag universes onto them. Find nodes asks the network what’s there, and Kinelight flags another console sending the same universe — the usual reason lights flash.
How do gobos work in Kinelight?
Kinelight reads each fixture’s gobo wheel from its profile. Choose Gobos when you make a look and your spots get gobos, movement and effects while your washes take the colour — you never need to remember which slot is which.
Can I busk a show live?
Yes. The busk page is built from windows — groups, colour, tempo, effects, looks, positions and beam — with masters for the size, speed and level of every effect and a busk fader with 2 s and 5 s fades. Anything you busk can be recorded as a cue in the song.
Can I program cues to music?
Yes. Each piece holds its song, and you record cues as it plays. Cues sit on a timeline at the piece’s tempo, and GO runs the show piece to piece.
Can I control it from my phone or iPad?
Yes. Open the remote on any iPad or phone on the same network. The iPad gets Control, Busk and Stage; the phone gets Run, Faders, Cues, Focus and Looks. Pick lights on the stage grid, then Aim and tap where they should point.
Can I use a second screen or a video wall?
Yes. Open the stage or the cue list on any extra monitor or TV and it follows the main window live. The back-wall video can go to its own display — fit, fill or full screen — and fade to black while it keeps running.
Pyro & effects
Can Kinelight fire pyro?
Kinelight triggers pyro through switch packs and DMX: you arm the system, arm each device, then fire — by hand or from the pyro lane on the timeline. Looks, cues and effects never fire it. Kinelight isn’t a certified pyrotechnic firing system — use each device’s own hardware interlock and a licensed operator, and keep the area clear.
What about haze, smoke, CO2 and confetti?
Smoke machines, hazers, fans and bubbles run on a level and ignore the Grand Master and Blackout, so the room stays hazy. CO2, confetti and flame units are armed and fired like pyro, and can be cued on the music.
Subscription & account
How much does it cost?
Three plans. Kinelight is £199 a month: control and patching — the Control page, groups, looks, stage and 3D, 670 fixture profiles, one Art-Net or sACN universe and MIDI controllers. Kinelight Pro is £399 a month and adds busk, shows and the timeline, pyro & SFX, the iPad & phone remote, second screens and the video wall, 4 Art-Net & sACN universes with the monitor and OSC, and AI looks. Kinelight Venue is priced for your building (POA — fill in the form at /venue for a quote), for venues and production companies: everything in Pro plus unlimited universes, camera tracking, three main + backup Mac pairs (one per room), a setup call, priority support and payment by invoice.
Can I try it first?
Yes, two ways. The free demo is the Control page on our 20 m festival main stage, in 3D on your Mac — no card, nothing sent to the lights. Or start a free 14-day trial of Kinelight Pro from the Pricing page: patch your own lights and run a real show with everything in Pro. When it ends, choose a plan and the same Macs carry on.
Can I cancel?
Whenever you like. Your show files live on your Mac, so they’re always yours. When a subscription ends, the paid features switch off the next time that Mac checks in — never in the middle of a show.
Can I change plan?
Yes, whenever you like, from your Subscriptions page. Move up and the extras unlock on your Macs within half a minute; move down and they lock again at the next check-in — never in the middle of the lights.
What happens after I pay?
You come straight back to your Subscriptions page, where your activation code is waiting — already live on your account, so you don’t need to type it anywhere. Open Kinelight, go to Settings → Account and sign in. Your renewal date and receipts are on the same page.
I have an activation code. What do I do?
Go to Activate, make your account (or sign in), and type in the code — it looks like KL-7Q4M-X2PD-9HRT. Then open Kinelight and sign in from Settings → Account.
How do I sign in on my Mac?
Open Kinelight — until it’s signed in, the app is faded with a sign-in box on top. Press Sign in, sign in on this website in your browser, choose whether it’s your main or backup Mac, and it’s linked straight away. After that it works offline.
Can I use more than one Mac?
Kinelight and Kinelight Pro cover a main Mac and a backup Mac, and you can swap them in the app or on your account page. Kinelight Venue covers three main + backup pairs — one for each room — and more rooms are £99 a month each.
What does the website know about me?
Your account, your subscription, and the names of the Macs you’ve linked, with when each one last checked in. Your shows, patches and media never leave your Mac.
